Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I work at a Title I school that has been open two years as the music and choir teacher. The program focuses on DLI; students learn Spanish half of their school day and English the other half.

My students love music class and are inquisitive with their questions and creative with their answers.

Most also come from middle class or lower income families. They are excited to learn, but often cannot afford to buy extra supplies because their budget does not allow.

I am a firm believer in cross-curricular lessons in the specials classroom and because of this my older students have assignments that require writing while my younger students do more hand ons.

My Project

I am a strong advocate of cross-curricular lessons in the music classroom. Students remember information better when it is sung in a song. Students also work harder on core subjects when the topic is one they are interested in. I support my ELA coworkers with story webs on articles about musicians. I support math standards by showing students how math is related to music. I also support science by showing the students how and why sound works.

To be able to support cross-curricular lessons, I need clipboards and somewhere for those clipboards to be easily accessible, so they can quickly get to work.

As of right now we are keeping the clipboards under chairs, but it looks messy and makes Fridays when stacking chairs more difficult. By tying an apron on the back of the chair, the clipboard can be stored on the back of the chair in the apron with two sharpened pencils.
