Help me give my students basic classroom supplies, such as post-it notes, markers, and a classroom papers organizer so their focus can be on learning, and not reorganizing, each time they transition from classroom to classroom.
My students are a diverse group; they come from a variety of socio-economic backgrounds, with a wide range of academic abilities. Middle school students are a fascinating group- some are still very childlike, and others think they are mini-adults!
Generally, middle school students share several characteristics: they need to feel part of a group, and prefer active over passive learning activities that involve working with their peers.
They are capable of more abstract thinking, and are able to process multiple thoughts and ideas. They never want to feel different, or in any way out of place.
They have a variety of learning styles and needs, but they do have one thing in common - they need support and assistance with organization as they transition from one classroom and teacher to the next.
My Project
My middle school students do not have lockers, and they need to carry their belongings with them all day. Frequently, they are so overwhelmed, they don't always have the items they need. This causes many of them stress, because they are great kids who don't like to make mistakes- but all too often, mistakes do happen. By providing them with basic classroom essentials, they will know that our classroom is a place where their focus is on learning.
By having needed materials all in one place for my students, it will make organization for my students automatic.
I can't even remember how many times I've heard, "Can I go look for my pen? I left it somewhere". I want my students to know that our classroom is a safe space, where they can count on having whatever they need so they don't become distracted by materials they don't have.
Research shows that middle school differs from elementary school in many ways - one of the most important is the increased pressure it puts on kids' organizational abilities. I want to remove this pressure from my students- especially those with special needs. They lose important items, and I won't penalize them as they go through this challenging time in their lives. The desktop Paper Organizer will allow me to put extra handouts in one central location, so they know where to look for important assignments. A supply of Post-its will give them an additional tool to label their classwork, homework, etc. in an organized manner. They will also benefit by having giant Post-it notes and markers to make anchor charts, Band-aids (because middle schoolers get boo-boos, too!), and an ample supply of pencils. Having the tools they need readily available will remove stress and put the emphasis back on learning.
