Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Earlier this winter, one of my long-time students, Izzy cried after reading a grade level passage. "Why can't I read?" she cried miserably. "Some days, I can do it. Like the other day, I was on the bus, and I read a sign! I was so excited! Today though, these words are really hard. I want to be a teacher or a counselor for kids going through a hard time, but can I do that if I can't read?" Izzy looked at me for hope, and it was then that I assured her that we would continue to work incredibly hard to make sure she could reach her goals.

Later that day, Izzy gave me a sticker and she said, "It says you are my sunshine.

I read it by myself, and I was so excited that I thought of you because you are my sunshine and you're helping me to read!" I put the sticker on the back of my phone and carry it everywhere with me.

Every week, I meet with reading specialists around our district to brainstorm the complex needs of our student population. I share problems of practice, like the one Izzy is facing with fluency and look for ways to support my struggling kids. This past fall, I took classes towards my Reading Specialist degree to learn more. In my learning this year, I found this program called RAVE-O, that supports students who have difficulty with rapid naming, a skill that supports reading fluency. Our school doesn't have access to it, but you can help me bring this program to Izzy and other struggling friends, who need to take the next step in achieving their goals and their dreams.
