Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As a second year Reading and Language Arts teacher, I serve two classes of fifth graders in a school where 95%+ of the student body receives free lunch. The students in my classroom are a mixture of Hispanic and African American children. Most of them come from broken homes in which members of their family never graduated from high school. Their parents often work more than one job or live in government housing. Many of them feel that they are destined to live the same way in their own future.
Not only do these students suffer in their personal lives due to family and economic situations, but now they are suffering in school. The school district, like many others, has recently suffered one severe budget cut after another and as a result, our school has experienced not only a loss of funding for supplies, but also a loss of school personnel.
My goal as a teacher has been to continually stimulate my students so they will be inspired to continue learning and be fluent and life long readers. Financial constraints do not allow for us to purchase additional materials for the classroom. A wide variety of materials would help to make the students' learning more engaging and hands-on. The materials I am requesting such as the pocket charts and reading comprehension games will enhance my students' learning and allow them to view learning in a different light. My goal is to create an educational game center. The games to be included in the center are perfect for small groups and will help students to better develop their communication skills as well as their reading skills.
Your help will make it possible for my students to experience different kinds of learning apart from the textbook and allow them to expand their knowledge through various educational games and small group activities. It will also help them to develop their social skills and inspire them to continue with their education and reach for their goals.
