Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students..my learning disabled, emotionally disturbed, language impaired, ADD/ADHD you name they've been labeled it-students... are GREEK MYTHOLOGY SCHOLARS! Oh yes they are!
It really brings tears to my eyes when I see how responsive these 4th and 5th graders are to this very sophisticated material. Their recall, their attention to detail, their sense of story structure and the amazing conversations that these stories initiate are so impressive. The level of interest my students have in the lives of these complex characters with odd sounding names like Persephone, Pasiphae, Ariadne, Arachne, Theseus, Daedalus ad infinitum.. is something I have never seen in 13 years of teaching. To experience with them these fascinating, rich, textured stories many of which I'm learning along with them, is SO exciting...It has been one of the greatest rewards of my teaching career.
The great part of living across the street from my school is that I get to see my students out and about in the neighborhood...the down -side is I see them hanging out entirely too much.
Even when I see students and former students at our library, they're often on the computer or chatting. I rarely see them READING!!! Now I'm not sure if someone was following my own two school-aged children how often they would see them reading in public, although my years of chanting, "What book are you reading?"..."Where's your book?"...Don't walk out of the house w/out a book." has paid off in spades and my 11 year old is, I'm proud to say, addicted... to reading.
I want to pester my students in the same way and START by getting BOOKS into their hands and homes....Books that they can read at home,while they're waiting for a bus, or a haircut or at the dentist's office...so that they ALWAYS have a book on them!
And not just any book...
I need 50 copies of BOOK 1 of PERCY JACKSON & THE OLYMPIANS series by Rick Riordan titled "THE LIGHTNING THIEF. I would like to initiate a "book club" with my students reading and discussing the first few chapters of this book. Then, after they're hooked, (and they will be!) I want to give them the book for summer reading.
The 5th graders who will be moving on will have something to share during 6th grade Social Studies , (in which Greek studies plays a fair part) and my returning 4th graders will having read over the summer will NOT loose a feel for the material when we hit the ground running in the fall.
With your donation WE can empower these 50 students to follow up on the work that they have done all year.
These books are about a learning disabled, demi-god, (A Harry Potter-type) and on every page, these amazing scholars of mine can relate something they know about Greek Mythology and experience it in a fresh and novel way.
Who knows?....maybe when I see my students at our neighborhood public library they'll be researching on the computer...chatting with their friends about Zeus and Hera's marriage or...GASP...READING the second or third Percy Jackson book!!!
That will be our shared success, with the gift of these wonderful books to these heroic kids...
