Help me give my students the ability to work, focus on the instruction being given while providing them the space to work in comfort: something they need to show them we see, hear, and feel their needs.
My students are a diverse group in size and shape, and school desks do not give them racial justice. They need to be seen and heard, they need to have representation. This means so many of them have a hard time sitting, or even fitting, into a standard-size classroom chair attached to a desk, and ours are old and tired. Harsh fluorescent lights do not help the environment, nor produce anything but sterile, overly bright lights, that make students just want to put their heads down and close their eyes. I want to change that: I want them to want to come into my classroom.
Changing the look and feel of a sterile classroom is sure to make the students engage more, relax, and enjoy learning a subject they either fear or dislike.
Teaching 9th graders ELA has its challenges to begin with, but when they are uncomfortable or overwhelmed by the sterile atmosphere, the kids tend to shut down. I need a few more items like a new rug, flexible seating chairs, and fluorescent light covers to transform this classroom into a room that will delight and engage the students: to show them we see them, we hear them, we feel their needs: for that, I need you.
