Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are some of the most amazingly strong and determined kids I have ever met. They are from a diverse low-income area and they have had to fight for what they have. Each of them have a variety of different disabilities, but that doesn’t stop them from taking charge and overcoming challenges to learn in my classroom. My students have learned that they are not disabled, they just learn differently. Each of my students has a desire to move to the next level in their learning and to do that, they need the ability to learn in different environments. Classrooms that limit their bodies and minds are not productive to them. They love the opportunity to move and sit in different areas to let their creativity flow.

My Project

My students have varied learning disabilities, but I have always told them that they aren't disabled, they just learn differently. Currently they have the freedom to sit in different areas of my room to do their independent practice and testing. I have two comfy beanbags and a couple of lapboards. The rest of the sitting areas are hard desks that are not conducive to creative thinking.

Alternative seating, such as balance balls and wobble chairs, will allow my students to move while they are working to be the best students they can be.

They are learning to be advocates for their own learning and letting them chose their learning space is one of those areas. For students with ADHD, a wobble seat can be the one thing that helps them focus and work to the best of their abilities.
