My Students
Do you remember how difficult it was to read both fiction and non-fiction stories in school and at the same time remember all the important details? These are the challenges that my students face each and every day.
My students are third graders at a public school in Nevada.
Most of the students are from lower income homes and do not have many resources available to them to improve their learning. The students come into my classroom with limited schema and need constant reinforcement to improve their language and writing skills.
My Project
I have implemented a new strategy this school year and it is called "The Daily 5." It is a new approach to teaching literacy centers. By using a variety of different lessons and center activities, my students will be exposed not only to new concepts, but build on what they already know and love--their schema; through a variety of center activities. One literacy center will be a listening center and I am therefor requesting biography books with a CD, to focus on non-fiction text. Another center will focus on comprehension strategies, such as predict/infer, question, and cause and effect. These skills will be addressed with the Comprehension Concepts Teaching Centers games/activity centers. Finally, the Hot Dots Reading Comprehension cards will be a fun and technological approach to improving test taking and overall comprehension.
Please help us build our comprehension!
These new materials are geared to address the nation-wide standards and skills that all third grade students must know. The variety of materials will address visual, auditory and kinesthetic learners. In so doing, our knowledge base will grow and test scores will improve! The materials requested will address both non-fiction and fiction, which are both keys to improving comprehension!
