It's All About Social Awareness, Take 2!

My Students

My students say, "What are we doing today? Can we play a game?" You play a game one time with your students and they always want games. So I have to think of ways to make my students think they are playing a game all of the time. I try to make my learning as fun as it can be. This means teaching with hands-on materials.

I work with ages 4-12 as a speech therapist.

So all my kids have some sort of speech or language need. The needs can range from just some difficulties with some speech sounds to autism to a severe learning disability. All my students are different which makes teaching both exciting and a challenge. I see my students one to three times a week depending on their mandates. My students have all different backgrounds and learning needs. Hands-on learning helps children learn by having fun. They tend to remember more when there are hands-on activities.

My Project

Some of my speech students struggle with social skills. They need more attention and engaging materials to help address their needs in this area. I currently have some small social groups where I work on social skills. I have many more students I am seeing that need more social awareness development.

I requested many of the basics in my first social awareness project and LOVE using the materials.

My students really relate to the characters and it gives them a way to use language to describe a social issue they are having.In this project, I am requesting a part two to build on the materials and skills that I have already. I am requesting a few items to supplement what I already have in my speech room like the Thinkable and Unthinkable posters and a foam brain. I am also requesting Volume 2 of We thinkers to build on Volume 1, giving my students more vocabulary to understand and use like flexible thinking, smart guess, expected and unexpected behaviors, and much more. I am also requesting a few books like Glassman, Kool Cucumber and Whole Body Listening since these seem to be the more common issues I am currently seeing with my students. These books are so engaging!

Social thinking is the process by which we interpret the thoughts, emotions, and actions of another person along with the context of the situation to understand that person’s experience. This can impact relationships and success in school and at work. Please help me give my students more materials that can help my speech students learn more effectively but also will make it more engaging!
