I am a second grade teacher at Glen Alpine Elementary. The desire to understand and to really "see" a problem is the beginning step to understanding for my energetic class. My wish is to help my students have a better understanding of how to tell time. Telling time is a very difficult process, especially if a student does not understand that the hour hand moves along with the minute hand. In a young student's mind the hour hand is ALWAYS on the number. Most student clocks allow the hour and minute hands to be set independently, thus the concept of the relationship of the hour and minute hand movements are lost. I would love for my students to be able to have "hands"-on experiences with student clocks that have gears in them. This would allow the students to visualize how clocks work. The addition of individual plastic geared movement clocks would allow the students to practice time skills easier. The geared movements of these hand-held clocks would provide a tool for the manipulation and understanding of minute/hour hand relationships. The geared clocks would be ideal in providing my students the time-telling concepts they need. I would love to provide this resource for my classroom for whole group and individual learning experiences. The joy of my students discovering the mystery of time is one adventure I am passionate in my desire to provide.
