My students are 9th through 12th graders and are hard workers. Our school specializes in the education of children with learning disorders such as Autism and ADHD, with over 70% of our students on an IEP. Many of our students also come from low-income households. While much of our focus during the day is on the core academic areas, we also strive to develop social, emotional, coping and life skills in our students.
Our low student to teacher ratio allows students to build lasting, positive relationships with adults throughout the school as well as allowing teachers to get to know what works best for our students as individuals.
We've worked hard this year to develop a classroom family type of atmosphere in our room. We've all dealt with difficulties this year that has helped us look on the bright side of various situations and make the best with what we have. Recently, we moved into a much bigger school building and that change has been hard for some of my students to adjust to. Keeping our classroom procedures consistent and familiar will help my students make this transition much easier.
There are sometimes when even high school students just need 5 minutes to calm down before coming back to class. The hourglass timers will be used when students need a moment to calm down and compose themselves before returning to class ready to learn.
My students benefit from breaking our hour long class periods into smaller 15-20 minute chunks of time.
This helps my students know how long they need to be focused on a given task before moving to a different task. We utilize a 3 group rotation system in my classroom for this purpose. We will be using the electronic timers to ensure that all groups have the time that they need to complete work in the 3 groups.
The privacy dividers will be used when students are working on tasks that require them to focus on something in front of them and will help eliminate visual distractions from other students.
