My Students

My K-5 elementary school has roughly 450 English Language Learners. I serve about 125 of these students. These students come from a wide range of countries, and speak several different languages.

Many of my ELLs have had little to no education; some even have interrupted education where they were in school for a bit, then taken out of school for various reasons.

Not only are these ELL students expected to learn English while in school, they are also responsible for knowing the academic content being taught in the classrooms. As their ELL teacher, it is my job to scaffold my instruction enough that they feel supported in their educational journey.

My Project

All students are expected to become readers by the time they leave Elementary school. However, students who speak a language other than English have challenges to overcome first. Not only are they learning to speak and understand a new language, they also have the same expectations placed on them as English-only students in regards to reading and writing in English.

I have worked with ELL students for the last 19 years, and I have yet to find a phonics program that meets the needs of ELL students.

After researching different phonics programs, Zoo Phonics was the most complete program that has a specific kit that specifically targets the skills that ELLs need in order to be successful.

These materials will help my students learn the letter names and sounds much faster, which in turn will help them to become readers in a shorter amount of time!
