Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember getting a weekly news magazine when you were a child? I do. I could not wait until Friday afternoons to read what was happening around the world. I loved being able to take it home and talk about it with my parents! It gave me an appreciation for the world - no matter how far away!

I teach in a large, urban school in New Jersey.

My twenty-five (or so) students are eager and enthusiastic first graders who are primarily Hispanic. Although I may have students representing a number of different Latino countries, their lives and experiences are rather limited. Most of my students receive free or reduced lunch and have not been outside of the city in which they live. They love to learn about the world - especially when they can relate to it.

My Project

I would use the subscriptions to Time for Kids to help my students gain a better understanding of the world around them. This periodical has a wonderful way of engaging young learners and helping them understand important concepts without taking away meaning. Time for Kids is a wonderful springboard for more extensive subject matter and it's a wonderful resource to help students develop meaningful conversation with their parents. Coupled with these subscriptions, the books I ordered would be utilized to help students make even more sense of the world around them by providing a resource to deepen their understanding and create meaningful connections which, as we know, are so important for all future learning.

Your donation to this project would make such an important difference to my students!

It would not only give them something to look forward to each week, but it would also help them to develop a sense of where they belong in this great big world! In an economically difficult time, subscriptions to Time for Kids would help me be able to teach current events in a fun and meaningful way. Your donation would allow my students to travel the world without having to leave our classroom!
