Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Math worksheets are boring! I am trying to make math as hands-on and fun as I can so that all of my students can understand the content I am teaching.
I teach 24 wonderful first graders.
Our school is in a challenging part of the city. (Our city has a population of 1 million!) There is often violence and gang activity. My students don't let those things keep them down. They come to school every day very excited to learn!
My Project
I am trying to make math as hands-on as I possibly can. With our new math curriculum we rely heavily on ten frames. Currently I copy a ten frame onto paper. This works, but I have to run around the room to check the students' answers to make sure they are understanding. With the magnetic ten frames my students can make their answers then hold up the board for me to see. I can quickly check the entire class for understanding at once.
I am also requesting Grab & Go Math Games. I have several students who quickly learn what I am teaching and then sit there while the wait for the rest of the students. These math games would allow early finishers to keep the learning going.
The last thing I am requesting is an equivalency puzzle. Did you know that first graders now have to look at a problem like
4+3=5+2 and decide if it is true or false? I didn't have to do problems like that until much later! This puzzle will help them to practice this new skill.
By donating to my project will be improving the math education of my students and my future students.
We all have an easier time understanding a concept when we are able to touch it. These materials will do just that. Thank you for taking an interest in my class and in public education!
