My Students

One of the greatest lessons I’ve ever learned was taught by a group of some of the most amazing kids I’ve ever known. For the past 11 years, I’ve had the honor of working with students of varying abilities (Autism, Down’s syndrome, intellectual disabilities, sensory processing disorders, etc.), students who have all shown me what it means to live a life without limits.

My students are consistently eager, enthusiastic, and ready to explore all the opportunities they have to learn in a way that benefits them the most.

As an educator of students with disabilities, creating a space that is conducive to their learning needs is very important to the climate of the classroom. Every day my students enter the class ready to live beyond their disabilities in the most brave, courageous, and limitless way. I am consistently impacted and inspired by them and I just want to provide experiences that support them and their needs!

My Project

Imagine a fire alarm incessantly going off. Now, imagine anxiety creeping in at the sound of the painstaking alarm. Sensory Processing Disorder is a condition in which a person has trouble receiving and responding to information received through the senses. SPD is most commonly found in those with developmental conditions (Autism Spectrum and other special needs). One way to assist with SPD is through sensory integration. The goal of sensory integration is to help children acclimate and respond in an appropriate to things that would normally send their senses into overdrive.

In an effort to achieve sensory integration in our classroom, supplies such as noise cancellation headphones, weighted blankets, and desk chair pockets will help create a space that is conducive to their learning needs.

This school year, we are focusing our attention on creating spaces and opportunities where the students can use their superpowers to beat sensory overload.
