This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"Yeah! I love science Mrs. Murdoch!" These words came from one of my eager third graders when I informed them of what they'll be learning this year. I want to continue this type of excitement in the classroom, so please help us obtain what we need to have hands on science activities.
In a high need, low income school which was restructured a few years ago and is doing exceptionally well, I teach 3rd grade.
We became the first elementary school in our part of the state to exit Program Improvement. We were a 2010 State Distinguished School. This is due to the use of proven teaching techniques that are effective for all learners, but especially English language learners which is 80% of our student population.
Our school structure is based on the belief that these students (and all students!) deserve a quality education and can achieve! We hold our students to high expectations. We just need support getting the materials we need to make learning engaging and effective for ALL students.
My Project
Working in an economically challenged area and budget cuts, it is extremely difficult to get materials that our students need that will support their learning. The resources I requested such as the vocabulary readers, moon phases kit, and planets kit will support and enhance my students' understanding of the solar system. The vocabulary readers will build my students' nonfiction skills and vocabulary. In addition, these books can be used to teach text features and improve their comprehension in reading expository texts! My third graders will be able to track the phases of the moon over a four-week cycle. The solar system kit will be a visual representation of the solar system as well as provide a great introduction to astronomy! Having learning materials that students can touch and build will create such an excitement and promote a highly engaged classroom.
Funding has been scarce and our children suffer.
There has been less funding to support public education, yet the demand continues to increase especially with the common core standards. Our students need to have the tools to help them prepare of what is to come, and creating scientific minds through hands on activities and working cooperatively will help address this issue.
