My project needs live insect larvae, microscopes and insect slides, and insect research books.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach first grade at an inner-city elementary school. Most of the students are from the low socioeconomic surrounding the blight of the school. They have few opportunities to explore nature and all its beauty. And yet, they are called upon to understand the complexities of science and math concepts on high stakes tests without any personal expriences.
Our project seeks to change that.
Children are fascinated by the tiny world of insects. What better way to meet critical science standards of knowing how animals meet their needs in different ways than through a hands-on, investigation of the life-cycles of various creatures. Through the study of both beneficial and destructive insects such as silkworms, butterflies, mealworms, ladybugs and ants, my students will learn about environments, animal parts and how to research and examine their world more closely. Math standards and skills such as counting, sorting, comparing and contrasting, noticing differences, sequencing, recording through bar graphs, and developing an understanding of scale will be learned in meaningful ways.
Through a carefully constructed study of insects, our project will ask students to build on their interests and curiosity as they move through the phases of our study: rich discussions, observations of insect metamorphosis in the classroom, fieldwork to collect specimens, representation of their findings, investigation through observation and use of scientific tools such as a microscope, and display of their discoveries for other classes and their families.
The resources needed for our project are principally insect larvae for students to study, record and report on. Microscopes and insect slides will be used by students to make scientific explorations, as well as, to create our own slides. Students will read and look at insect books to research about insects they want to find out more about and to confirm their predictions and understandings.
You can help my students become competent in science and math standards and meet the requirements of No Child Left Behind. Without the kind of experiences this project provides, learning will be relegated to hearing others tell about nature. Please help my students to experience nature first hand!
