My students need 4 microscopes, an LCD digital microscope, microscope slides, teaching posters, and pocket magnifiers to uncover and explore a hidden world.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
What scientist wouldn't want to discover a new world, especially when it's right before his or her eyes? Using new technology and modern equipment, students will investigate life and the earth's resources from a microscopic perspective.
My fourth graders participate in a weekly pull-out Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) program.
Each day of the week, I teach a different group of students from throughout our district's 18 elementary schools. Students come from a range of backgrounds including low-income households and limited English speaking families. Many students receive free or reduced lunch. We offer an enrichment curriculum that is specially designed for students who require advanced study above and beyond the regular core curriculum. Topics of study include geology, paleontology, and marine science. Field trips to science centers and natural history museums further enhance and extend the program.
My Project
This year my students will focus on geology and marine science. New powerful microscopes will enable them to view magnified specimens with ease. Using a digital microscope, I can enhance our lab activities by capturing images and short videos, which can be transferred to a PC for later reference. Consulting the slide posters, students will learn the parts of the microscope and the different slide views of the prepared plankton and sea life specimens. The hand-held pocket magnifiers will allow children to closely examine seashells and rock samples. Inquiry and investigation lead to new ideas. My budding geologists and marine biologists will be inspired to pursue careers that explore the unseen and microscopic environment.
GATE students have unique academic and social needs.
These high-achieving students love learning and applying new concepts to real world situations. The requested science equipment and materials will inspire children to think about their natural surroundings in new and different ways. Learning creatively instills a passion for academic discovery! With your help, my GATE students will learn it truly is a small, small world!
