My Students
My students need to learn how to love Math. They come from home environments wherein they don't get enough exposure to real world mathematics problems. They haven't learned how to apply the Math concepts that they learn in school to their real lives.
My students are primarily minority children from low-income homes.
They attend a Title 1 public school in Virginia and many receive free and reduced lunches because their families are economically struggling. School funding is being slashed and very often the most needy students, like those in my school, suffer even more as a result. My school's resources are dwindling rapidly and we have to be more creative about the ways in which our students learn.
My Project
I am a firm believer that once you understand how math fits into your personal life, you are able to truly understand how reliable of a resource it can be. I did not grow up loving Math because I didn't have teachers who wanted to show me how it applied to my life and how fun it can be. The 5 game libraries that I am requesting take the basic concepts that we are learning in fifth grade and make them more approachable to students by putting them in real world situations. They are also presenting them in a fun, board-game format in which students can collaborate in small groups to solve problems.
My students are really good kids who are unfortunately living in sometimes very difficult circumstances.
They have very few resources at home and as teachers, we are faced with the challenging task of trying to make them forget about their home difficulties for a few hours. These board games are a great way to give them a chance to have fun while learning challenging concepts.
