It's a Fact and I Can Prove It!

My students need 3 sets of nonfiction readers that develop their sight word vocabularies, pique their interest in science topics, and help them learn to read nonfiction texts.

My Students

In our district, there is an emphasis on learning to read nonfiction text. At the Kindergarten level, we must develop an extensive sight word vocabulary and comprehension skills while creating an interest in science topics. We have no books with which to do this task!

My Kindergarten students come from a high-needs urban community.

More than thirty languages other than English are spoken in the homes of these children. Some of my students have special needs. All of them are eager to learn and have a sense of wonder that helps them dive into any topic with relish! Our school is academically challenging but our budget does not allow for the purchase of new books that will help our students learn and grow.

My Project

My students need 3 sets of nonfiction readers that develop their sight word vocabularies, pique their interest in science topics, and help them learn to read nonfiction texts. I need a collection of high quality readers to engage the students in science learning. These books feature full-color photos and simple text using sight words my students must master. The topics range from the five senses to animals and insects, all science topics about which the children must learn. I will be able to use these books with small groups of students to encourage vocabulary development, critical thinking, comprehension and learning how to read a nonfiction text. (Yes, in Kindergarten, children learn to interpret the data on a graph, read fact bubbles, captions, the index and the table of contents!)

Your generous funding of this project will make so much learning possible.

It will help my students gain a special skill set that comes with reading nonfiction books. It will add to the store of information learners must develop and further encourage that sense of delight and wonder that youngsters have. Imagine how this will empower the student who reads a nonfiction text and then, with great pride and sense of importance, explains his new learning to another student or to an adult.
