Each day before school, students ask the science teacher if they can work in the school garden. Despite the drought they have seen several insects & have come to the library to look them up. So we would like to have the students learn first hand about butterflies & bugs!!
My students attend a continuation school for 7-12 grade.
Students often come from juvenile hall & are on probation. Many are in group homes. Over the last year the library has worked with the science teacher to expand & enrich the school garden. Students love working in their urban garden & have conducted several research projects about the drought, organic growing techniques & cultivating healthy food plants.
My Project
We would like the students to observe, study & collect data on insects using science drawing journals as well as technology.
The library was opened in January 2014 & I would like students to have technology as well as print materials for their research.
Using their science drawing journals will help our students pay closer attention to the the living creatures in the garden. After they compile data they will share their findings with illustrated displays in the library.
Our students become much more engaged with hands on learning.
Many have not had opportunities to work in a garden or visit community institutions like science museum or zoo. Study of live butterflies & bugs will "liven" up their science classes!
