My students need a reading program that allows them engaging choices while addressing academic rigor and accountability. They need a class subscription to Big Universe.
It's a Big Universe, and somebody has to read those great books. It might as well be the fifth grade students in my class. They would adore high level books in a variety of content areas that are accessible online.
I teach fifth grade students in a New York City public school.
We live in the borough of Queens which is one of the most diverse areas in the nation. We also have the distinction of having libraries that boast a very high circulation of books. We are proud of the many cultures and languages that are represented in our neighborhood school. The rich tapestry of the many heritages attending our school offers global perspectives that enhance the learning environment. Expectations are high from an international community that wants the best for its children. Education is seen as the means to achieve upward mobility so both faculty and administration strive to offer the best to ensure success.
My Project
Reading is the key to success in any content area so I am requesting a class subscription to Big Universe. This reading program offers books online from K-8th grade across content areas. There is also an online writing component to allow students to hone writing skills as companion pieces to the available literature, both fiction and nonfiction. Assessments are also available to facilitate evaluation both for the student and the teacher. The program is so rich in what it offers, that it is the perfect vehicle for both differentiation and student engagement. Students can even have books read to them and they can add audio to their written work in an individual student account online. This is truly a 21st century reading program that sparks student interest. What a wonderful learning opportunity it would provide to my students.
A reading program that has a range of literature and reading level abilities is a powerful tool for use in the classroom.
Students could choose what they wanted to read, how they wanted to write about the book, record responses to literature, and illustrate their writing, all in the same account. The management of this reading program is well designed and easy to navigate. The choices inherent in the site with so many books on so many grade levels would motivate my students to read.
