This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Our first graders need a classroom that can do it all. Our room is small, and our students have diverse learning and sensory needs we want to support! We have spent the last two years improving this space to meet the needs of our students and curriculum. Sometimes the simplest materials (like a storage bench) are actually the ones that have the biggest impact on student experience throughout the day. These benches will be used in the meeting area to give wiggly kids a place they can focus and participate from. They will double as cozy library seating and storage so kids can read on the rug, which they love to do. And we will even use them as table seating for tables closest to the meeting area.
Some of our students like to spread out and move around while they learn, and sometimes it is hard for them to do so without distracting other kids in the meeting area.
Benches are a welcoming, caring way to provide them with the supports they need! We are also requesting a set of small, stacking lap desks to make the curriculum more accessible for students who need more sensory feedback while they write.
Why are we writing this project at the end of the school year? Our classroom will be used for summer school by lots of young children who deserve a functional and welcoming space. And of course we have been dreaming about the learning environment we want to offer our new class in the fall, and are starting to gather the essential ingredients to make it possible.
