Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My students are Latino learners and leaders of the future. Our school is the largest multicultural high school in the largest urban center in Pennsylvania. The student make-up is 80% Hispanic. Of these the majority are Puerto Rican and the remainder mostly Dominican. I teach English 3 (American Literature) and English 4 (World/British). I am certified also in Social Studies and Special Education. Interdisciplinary content connections and differentiation are extremely important to my students and me. Therefore, I need "high interest" topics and materials in order to make learning relevant and meaningful to all my students. With all due respect to The Bard and Mark Twain, latino students are marginalized by Anglocentric curriculum as they exist in school today My kids are in need of urban Latino heroes who can set an example of how to navigate through the urban jungle while keeping their dreams and creative aspirations alive. What better example than Junot Diaz to show the possibility of stepping up from the hood to the halls of academia, without succumbing to the blandness of America's melting pot duplicity of pop cultural sameness. Anglocentric America needs to stop perceiving Latino difference as indifference. Wake up! America's future lies in the hands and hearts of our Latino students!
