It's 3-D: Enhancing Learning through Interactive and Tactile Educational Materials

My Project

Alternative methods of learning, such as tactile and visual aids, are crucial to meeting the needs of students with autism, Down syndrome, apraxia, and other similar conditions. For instance, tactile and 3-D objects provide a sensory-rich learning experience that supports students’ engagement and understanding of basic academic concepts. These materials help to bridge the gap between verbal communication and academic learning, enabling students to demonstrate their knowledge in ways that align with their abilities. Currently, our classroom lacks sufficient interactive materials that could cater to these specific needs. As a result, students are often unable to fully engage with the curriculum, hindering their academic progress and self-expression.

Tactile alphabet letters will be used during literacy instruction to assist students in identifying letters and forming words.

For example, an item on my WishList is Touch and Read CVC Word Match. It is an activity that students can manipulate and engage with to build reading skills. The student will be able to touch the visual cues to say the individual sounds, blend the word and lastly, the picture of the noun or verb will be matched to the word. Completion of activity show a student is able to decode, and comprehend. 3-D objects will be incorporated into math and reading lessons. Objects to manipulate help students grasp the object and then help build abstract concepts like shapes, patterns, and numbers. Another item on my WishList is Math Peg Board. The numbers are raised for sensory input and the wooden pegs are inserted so a student can develop one to one correspondence.

The items on my list are activities that can be manipulated. Learning can be engaging and fun for all students. Achievement of an educational goal lead to a student's positive self image. "I can" statements can now be truly achieved.
