My Students

Do you remember how magical it was for you to listen to someone reading a book. I would like my students to feel that magic everyday in my classroom. With ipod touches they will be able to have that experience and connect with books that interest them.

My Kindergarteners are from a small town in California.

They are bright, enthusiastic learners who have named themselves the Cheetahs. The Cheetahs absolutely love books!! They love experiencing the magic of unlocking the meaning of the words as they form pictures in their heads. They are at the beginning literacy stage when it is so important to expose them to as many experiences with print as possible. We give them as many chances as we can every day to have a book in their hands or listen to a book being read. The best of both is when they can have the book in their hands and listen to it being read. That is where an ipod touch will be outstanding!

My Project

I am requesting ipod touches for my classroom so that my Cheetahs will be able to choose a book that interests them, snuggle up with it and enjoy! At this time we choose a book for a small group of children to listen to. If we don't have a copy of that book for everyone they have to share and hope to be able to see the print and pictures. It also may or may not be a book that is of interest to every child. This scenario has got to go! Just imagine it. A child will have the ability to choose the piece of literature that they want to experience. It may be a story, a book of poems, a song book or a science reader. They choose the book, snuggle up on a pillow and enjoy. This experience will be extremely engaging. Research shows that when an activity is of high interest, children learn. With these ipod touches my Cheetahs will learn to work independently and use technology to improve literacy.

With class sizes continually increasing and budgets shrinking, it is harder and harder to give students the resources and individual attention they need and deserve.

With the ipod touch, students will be able to engage in an activity that is appealing, meaningful and independent, therefore freeing up the teacher to work with smaller groups of children. When teachers are able to work with smaller groups and give them the attention they need, student achievement rises and we create scholars.
