I am the intervention specialist in a second grade, full inclusion classroom. Not only do I co-teach in the classroom, I also manage the IEPs and goals of the nine students with disabilities. In the school system where I teach, more than half of our students are low-income students. More often than not, some of my students come to school without even their most basic needs being met. Even with these barriers, this does not stop my amazing students from coming to school eager and anxious to learn and be the best they can be!
My students' disabilities range from mild to intensive, so I strive to make sure all of my students learn, no matter their ability levels, in this setting.
There is a lot of differentiated teaching and learning going on throughout the day to make sure I am meeting the needs of all of the students. This typically means I need to make sure I have a variety of resources at my fingertips to be able to provide my students with everything they need to be able to learn. My goal is to set them up to be independent, contributing members to society in the future!
My Project
We are working our way up to having a class set of iPads. We currently have 8 and are asking for two more iPads. What a difference they have made in our classroom! Our inclusion classroom houses students with many different needs, and iPads have made it possible to differentiate learning in so many ways. We understand that our students can't be expected to sit at a desk all day, so we've completely transformed our learning space that allows for so many different flexible seating areas. From couches to comfortable carpeting, to wobble stools, desks on wheels, and stadium seats - the options are endless for our students! They have so many opportunities of choice throughout the day, and during that time, the iPad is always a big hit!
Apps like Speakaboos (a library of over 200 interactive stories), Epic (an eBook subscription service), Kahoot (a game-based teaching platform) and many others provide our students with many different methods for learning all while having fun.
In addition to the apps, STEM, and embedding more inquiry based learning into our curriculum has been the professional learning focus of our school this year. We love to use the iPads to have students do research to come up with new innovations!
We have learned that safe storing and protective cases are crucial to ensure the safety of these valuable resources. We teach our students to respect our classroom technology, but we also know that accidents happen. The 18 Bay Tablet Charging Cart would be an amazing addition to our classroom as it would allow easy access to the iPads.
We are so thankful for the people who want to support us as we strive to give our students the best opportunities in our classroom!
