I teach Special Education students with emotional and behavior disorders in a self contained classroom. My students have special needs that may prevent them from being successful in a regular education setting but they are often able to thrive in our small group setting with positive behavior interventions and supports.
The unprecedented and challenging circumstances due to COVID-19 are especially challenging for my students with emotional and behavioral issues because they depend on the structure and safety of our classroom environment and frequent positive reinforcement and redirection.
My special education students learn best in an organized and structured environment but also benefit from frequent brain breaks. It can be especially difficult for them to focus independently on schoolwork without this structure environment and frequent positive reinforcement. They are most focused when they are able to use engage in hands on learning that integrates art, technology, and learning through games and play.
The majority of my students come from low-income households and often do not have access to technology, books, and supplies outside of school.
Help me give my class an iPad and Apple Pencil, along with protective materials, in order to provide tech savvy teaching during this period of school closure.
These items can be used to provide distance learning instruction in a more tech-savvy way and without being confined to one room as with a traditional desktop computer.
The iPad will allow me to provide specialized instruction to more than one student or group of students at a time and in any location. The Apple Pencil allows allows me to turn the iPad into a digital interactive whiteboard as well as for more nuanced distance learning document creation. Once school resumes, we can also use these items for iReady and other classroom activities.
