This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Imagine this: A roomful of inquisitive 7th graders in a multicultural literature class who have no ability to perform Internet research on essential social justice topics. Unfortunately, our school has extremely limited resources, with no technology to put into students' hands.
Our 7th and 8th grade students live in a high-poverty urban area of Northern California and attend a busy public middle school.
The great majority of them are so-called minority students.
Many of these students experience heart-breaking problems: homelessness, parents in the prison system, violence, and abuse, to name the worst. Despite these misfortunes, most students come to school to do their best to succeed. Can you help them?
My Project
Having an iPad in the classroom will allow students to take turns working in small groups to research self-selected social justice topics. For example, while reading a novel selection such as "Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry," students could perform background research on the topic and present their findings to the class. Rather being provided with pre-selected background information, students could investigate related topics that interest them. This type of inquiry-based learning increases students' abilities to evaluate information, make good academic decisions on resources and content, and create presentations that communicate their findings clearly.
Many of these students have huge hurdles to overcome in their lives.
Send a message to them that--even though they are from lower-income backgrounds--they still deserve the technology that more privileged students often take for granted. Give them the power of the Internet to support student inquiry!
