My Students
We adults know that Latin is useful in adulthood, but students tend to want what's flashy. The iPad bridges the divide. With its various apps, the iPad will allow students working at their seats to have their work projected on the classroom wall.
My students are urban kids admitted into a magnet high school.
They come from all parts of the city, but most are on free or reduced lunch. They are bright, cheerful, eager freshmen. Many are torn between doing what's right and doing what's popular. Getting them involved in the Classics is a great way to keep them on track toward college. (we have a 100% college acceptance rate!)
My Project
A colleague of mine has an iPad for the classroom. She uses it for instantly sharing work by beaming what the kids do onto the classroom wall/whiteboard. My idea is to use the iPad and a stylus like the Romans did with their tablet and stylus. I plan to have a worksheet on the iPad and give the stylus to students. They will then "write" on the iPad and their work will be on display.
Teenagers are really no different from toddlers, they both want to say to the world "Look at what I did!" The iPad will allow them to display their exuberance without looking childish.
