This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My first graders are superstars. They have a desire to learn and improve themselves. They want to make their parents and loved ones proud of them. My first graders live in an area prone to violence and poverty.
My first graders want to be successful in life.
However, there are many obstacles in their way. The parents I work with want to help as much as possible, but, because they work, it is hard for my students to get help at home. My students work very hard at the tasks I have them do. They try their hardest to understand the curriculum. My students love coming to my classroom every day to learn. They find it a safe and inviting place to be.
My Project
My classroom is lacking non fiction readers. It is essential for first graders to be exposed to non fiction readers. I will use these non fiction reading sets in small groups. We will read and discuss the content of the books. Small groups will also work together on finding out more information about the main topic.
It is critical that we get more non fiction readers into the classroom.
Without these sets of books, my students will not be able to understand this genre of reading. Having these non fiction readers will greatly help my first graders be more successful in school.
