My students need more hands-on vocabulary games like, Vocabulary Folder and Storyteller. The Rookie series are good informational texts with vocabulary pictures in each book.

My Students
Students say, "What are we doing today? Can we play a game?" You play a game one time with your students and they always want games. So I have to think of ways to make my students think they are playing a game all of the time. I try to make my learning as fun as it can be. This means teaching with hands-on materials. I work with ages 4-12 as a speech therapist. So all my kids have some sort of speech or language need. The needs can range from just some difficulties with some speech sounds to autism to a severe learning disability. All my students are different which makes teaching both exciting and a challenge. I see my students 1-3 times a week depending on their mandates. My students have all different backgrounds and learning needs. Hands-on learning helps children learn through having fun. They tend to remember more when there are hands-on activities.
My Project
I am requesting various vocabulary activities to add in my students' learning. I want more hands-on learning since this makes it fun for the students I work with. I would like the Vocabulary Folders so when any of my children are struggling with vocabulary and categorizing, they can start with these. The folders make learning fun. The folders are all hands-on pieces and the students place items where they need to go. They think it is a game but they are learning. For the Storyteller Box what I love about it is that it pre-teaches. When I do retell from stories and ask "wh" questions, this box teaches the basics of what each question means so they learn that first and then understand the question and can do it within a story next. All the Rookie Read-Abouts are informational stories, but each book has the vocabulary with a picture next to the meaning. This is a good way to help learning disabled children remember new vocabulary. It is a strategy that helps it stick in their brains! I am always trying to add materials for my speech room that enables the kids to feel like they are having fun while learning.
The materials I am requesting will do just that!
Since I pull out my kids for extra services, I want them to have fun and feel and help them at the same time. It is a win-win for everyone then! I feel that I do not have enough of just vocabulary activities or books, and many of my students start out with this area of weakness. All these materials will aid in their learning!
