Our school is a public Montessori school and we have the great privilege to teach by the Montessori pedagogy. Our young scholars are extraordinary because they are not afraid to be creative or curious, they love to question the world around them, they naturally care for one another, they stand up for themselves and one another, and they learn how to push themselves beyond their frustrations.
My Project
Every classroom is full of children learning self-control, and a Montessori classroom full of 3-6 year olds is no exception. The children are simply testing the limits and figuring out what’s right and wrong. My role, as their guide, is to help them navigate the often rough waters of childhood. After all, the behavioral lessons that stick with children are those that come from experiencing natural consequences. No amount of talking, finger-wagging, and chair-sitting will make a dent in their awareness... thus, when a classroom material breaks, or a piece of furniture comes apart, the children are in charge of fixing it. It's only natural. Many times I need to bring tools/clamps/glues from home the following day for the children to use. I would like materials that are stored in the classroom so that the minute something comes apart, that the child can tend to the repair immediately. I am asking for sandpaper blocks for cleaning up marks left on wooden materials, various glues for repairing things that fall apart, clamps to hold them together as the glue sets, jewelry making tools for fixing mathematical bead chains (and for creating art on the art shelves - dual purpose!), and a cordless drill for when we need a heavy duty fix. I am also asking for 3-part cards to teach the children proper terminology of the tools used, and a board book about tools. Lastly, we need a tray to carry the tools from the storage shelf to the work surface, along with a mat and an apron to protect the work surface and their clothing.
