I teach at a Title One creative art school. I have never met a group of artistic and creative thinkers like the children at this school. This year our school has adopted a new curriculum known as the Caring Classroom. Caring Classroom promotes creating a community that provides a warm, safe environment for young children to learn and grow. In order for our second graders to become successful learners, their basic needs for “safety” and “belonging” must be met.
My second graders are at a very impressionable age.
What we teach them at this age can have a powerful impact on their future. The caring classroom provides a setting, where our kids will experience a positive and productive sense of their own power and abilities. Our classroom community enables children to maintain positive interactions, which also promotes resilience as well as cognitive learning.
My Project
Our school has adopted a new social curriculum called Caring Classroom. We are to use this resource to help us create a caring classroom community for our students that provide a warm, safe environment for them to learn and grow. In this program, our kids will learn through collaboration with their peers and develop a positive and productive sense of their own power and abilities.
I believe that the Mind Spark Institute for Creative Thinking will help me take my Caring Classroom to the next level.
This three-day institute on equity-centered design thinking will focus on helping me promote empathy among my students. Helping my second graders discover empathy will aid them in solving real-world problems, develop positive coping skills and build self-esteem. My students are at a very impressionable age, the life skills and coping strategies they learn today will have a great impact on their life in the future.
