I teach third grade in an elementary school on a hill overlooking the beautiful city of San Francisco. The one commonality among the children in my care is that they all come from low-income families. Many speak a different language at home because their parents don’t speak English, so school tends to be the only academic learning environment for them. I have a wide range of cultures represented in my classroom, and with a Spanish Immersion program just being started at our school – celebrating the different cultures among us is more important than ever for my students and me.
Because of their financial situations, most of my students’ families are not able to provide many cultural and artistic opportunities for their children, aside from the occasional holiday or celebration. Our school has made a commitment to recognize and celebrate not only the diversity of our student population, but the diversity of our wonderful city and the world as well. We want to provide our students with multicultural experiences, especially regarding literature, but lack the funds and supplies necessary to follow through with our ambitions.
I have requested several multicultural literature collections from Lakeshore Learning. These books are intended to introduce children to the diverse people and cultures that make up our world, while celebrating the many qualities we share… and the differences that make each of us unique. They include; a multicultural paperback library for grades 2 thru 4, a multicultural "Big Book" set, a complete set of multicultural CD read-alongs, a “Multicultural Stories" paperback library, an “It's a Multicultural World!" library and finally, a “Celebrating Diversity" library just to round things off. I am confident that having these resources in my classroom will help me help my students meet our goal of celebrating diversity.
Help me teach my students how small this world is after all. Your support will provide my students the opportunity to explore the world around them, make connections, and embrace diversity – gaining pride in themselves and their own cultures and increasing their understanding of others.
