This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
An iPad would be an invaluable tool in my speech and language therapy sessions, particularly for my students who come from low-income backgrounds and have limited access to technology. In a classroom where all students receive free breakfast and lunch, and where resources are scarce, access to this type of technology can make a significant difference. The interactive nature of the iPad can help keep my students engaged and motivated, especially since many of them struggle with attention. There are numerous speech and language apps designed to support the development of articulation, expressive and receptive language, and social-pragmatic skills—all areas my students are working on as part of their Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).
My goal as a speech-language pathologist is to help my students make meaningful progress toward their IEP goals while fostering confidence in their communication skills.
The versatility of an iPad allows me to customize activities to meet each student’s unique needs, providing opportunities for immediate feedback and reinforcement. Additionally, many of the apps allow for data collection, helping me track student progress more effectively. By incorporating technology into our sessions, I can enhance their learning experience and create an engaging, interactive environment that caters to different learning styles.
What makes my students special is their resilience and determination despite the challenges they face. They come from diverse backgrounds and are eager to learn, but their opportunities are limited due to their environment. An iPad would not only provide access to cutting-edge tools for speech and language development, but it would also offer them a chance to interact with technology in a way that is often out of reach in their daily lives. This resource could open doors for my students, allowing them to thrive both in the classroom and beyond.
