My students value a focused and intentional instructional day where they can and will learn. We begin each day with "I can and I will!" In order to support my students' desires to do well and their instructional needs, I incorporate hands-on, engaging activities.
My second grade class is only one of three, and many of my 20 students are children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren of alumni.
My students come from very diverse backgrounds. They face hardships on a daily basis, but they don't let that get in the way of learning. They come to school with a growth mindset and the willingness to take on any challenge. They perform better when their work is valued and appreciated. I work to provide this by providing a safe classroom environment where students can interact with people they trust and feel valued.
My daily instruction is differentiated to meet my students' needs and increase student engagement. I strive to help my students meet the goals I have developed for them as well as the goals they have developed for themselves. We are building a classroom of lifelong learners.
My Project
For the 2019-2020 school year, I am motivated to read a picture book a day with my students because of the campaign #ClassroomBookADay started by Jillian Heise and inspired by Donalyn Miller.
For this specific project, I have selected titles that represent the races, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, academic abilities, and disabilities of my students, their families, and their peers.
As with the #ISeeMe campaign, I too, believe it is important that my students see themselves reflected in the books we share together.
The #ISeeMe campaign and #ClassroomBookADay campaign come together beautifully in this project by exposing my students to the benefits of daily read-alouds which include building community, developing empathy, exposure to diverse stories, opportunities to discuss complex texts, hearing modeled fluency, and enjoying a love for reading. It is my goal that my students will become lifelong readers when they are aware that there are books they can relate to.
