My students need stamps, stationary, and envelopes to write to their pen pals.

Imagine excited sixth grade students waiting for the mail to arrive so they can read a handwritten letter from their adult pen pal! This is what we'd love to see in two classrooms throughout the next school year.
The majority of our students read below grade level and their writing skills are not well developed.
This project supports both those deficits in learning.
Our children attend a middle school of 793 children, including 585 Blacks, 155 Hispanics, and 53 Asians, Multi-racial or Caucasians. Our Special Education program includes 120 students and 25 students whose first language is not English. The families in our community have an average income of less than $50,000. Our school is a Title I school, with over 95% of our students qualifying for free meals.
Postage stamps, brightly colored stationary and envelopes will allow our students to write to their pen pals once a month. Their pen pals will be adult volunteers from the community who will write anonymously until the end of the school year. In May, students and their pen pals will attend a pen pal party where their identities will be revealed. Refreshments will be provided by a local honor society of women educators.
Our sixth grade students will learn the art of writing a personal letter.
They will learn about proper form, using a salutation and a closing, and forming complete sentences and paragraphs. The students will learn to carry on a discussion and ask questions through writing. Students will have the opportunity to share their thoughts with an adult who does not judge or criticize. They can also learn compassion as their pen pal shares their experiences. Their writing and reading skills should show improvement which will be measured in end of the year testing.
