Is that the truth? That’s what we ask our students when they read nonfiction material. I teach third grade in a rural Title 1 school with a 51% free/reduce lunch student body. Third grade is the first time students are exposed to state testing. A majority of the state testing falls into the nonfiction category, however, students interact with this genre the least. To better prepare them to become adequate readers as well as life-long learners, my school needs additional nonfiction chapter books. With recent budget cuts to supplies and school personal, we are forced to spend allotted money on necessities like copy paper and staples. Therefore, ensuring students have exposure to a variety of literature has been pushed aside, unfortunately. Class sizes have increased leaving the books we have unable to be used since we do not have enough for each child. Our students need $378 to buy nonfiction chapter sets as well as additional copies of certain titles.
