This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I work with students with special needs in an inclusive, project-based school. Over 80% of our students receive free or reduced-priced lunches due to socioeconomic disadvantages. Despite these factors working against them, my students have grit, determination, and the desire to succeed.
Our school is dedicated to teaching everyone through project-based learning as a social justice educational tool.
We are a progressive, public, charter school devoted to teaching every child the skills and concepts they need to be successful in our ever-changing world.
We have created engaging, interactive online learning but cannot replicate the materials and books we have in the classroom.
We serve a large Mexican American population as well as a diverse social-economic group of families in the North County San Diego area. Our students love to build and have a natural curiosity about the world around them. With a project-based learning approach, we attempt to build an engaging classroom, rich with materials and access to real tools and resources. This has been challenging in a distance learning program.
We do not receive as much funding as local public schools and do not burden our parents with expenses; therefore, we are responsible for our own classroom.
My Project
In April, our inclusive, project based school is planning to transition to in-person learning. With this new transition comes many new challenges - one being space and where to keep all of our supplies in a systematic and sanitary way.
I would love to have a mini fridge/freezer combo to keep in our school's inclusion office to support students with their basic food needs.
Our students are used to being home for the entirety of their school day, and have been for almost a year. I worry about their endurance when we return, and hope that by providing healthy snack options for my students will boost their stamina with this transition. According to Maslow's Heirarchy of Needs, food and water are a necessity for students' success.
This fridge will be kept separate from other cohorts, and will be used solely for our inclusion staff to keep ourselves and our students safe as we transition to this next phase of reopening our schools.
