What does digest mean? Is a walrus a mammal? Why are mushrooms brown underneath? These are all questions my students have asked me this year. I would love to be able to say to them, let's look it up in an encyclopedia together. I am a second grade teacher at an inner city Chicago Public School. 98% of our students are at the poverty level. One of our goals is to get our children involved in research and to teach them how to ask questions and find the answers to those questions. I know in this day and age, many people use the internet to get information. We encourage our students to do the same, however, none of my students have internet access at home. At school we have one computer which we don't get to use as often as we'd like for research and when we do, only one child at a time can look up the information they need. I think it is important for students to know how to use other methods for research. I want to provide my students with encyclopedias in the classroom and teach them the great uses and resources an encyclopedia provides. The encyclopedias I am requesting look perfect for primary grade students. I believe it will help encourage their curiosity and help with teaching the much needed skills in research. My students are constantly asking interesting questions and it would be incredible to be able to help them find answers to their in an age appropriate encyclopedia.
