My students need art supplies including paper, card stock, tape, and oil pastels in order to receive instruction in the Iris Paper Folding technique.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Do you ever fold paper into an airplane and see if it can fly? Many of my students enjoy doing this (when they think I am not watching!) and with the help of the Disneyland CREATE grant, I would like to give them instruction in a technique called Iris Paper Folding this year.
My 5th grade students are living in a low economic area of California, speak English as a second language, and over 90% of them are qualified to receive free breakfast and lunch each day at school.
Needless to say, art resources in their homes are very limited. I have taken classes on a paper folding technique, and I would like to share this knowledge with my students. With the help of the Disneyland CREATE grant and other donors, I am hoping to receive the necessary supplies for my 5th grade classroom this year.
My Project
So many of my students do not even have a box of crayons or colored pencils at home to complete science drawings with, so art supplies would be extremely appreciated by my 5th grade class this year!
One part of the California Visual and Performing Arts Standards is Creative Expression and includes creating, performing, and participating in the visual arts. The standard states, "Students apply artistic processes and skills, using a variety of media to communicate meaning and intent in original works of art." With all of the paper supplies, such as the card stock and acid free scrapbooking paper I have requested, I will be able to give the students instruction in Iris Paper Folding. They will be receiving an experience that they would not otherwise have this year. Without these supplies, I am not able to provide this experience for them.
I am planning to teach these lessons in the spring, after May 18th, in order to have these projects available for viewing at Open House in June 2013.
With donations from generous individual donors and the Disneyland CREATE grant, my students will be receiving many art supplies that would not otherwise be available to them this school year.
