My students need iPads to support their reading comprehension as well as to have access to a variety of fiction and non-fiction texts.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students come from various ethnic backgrounds of New York City which brings a lot of diversity into my classroom. My classroom consists of 24 second graders, twelve of which have special needs and four are English Language Learners. Given these diverse backgrounds, each student has their own individual needs.
Each one of their stories is unique and helps cultivate a community of respect and trust.
Most of my students are from low income homes and have experienced trauma throughout their lives and education comes second to their sense of security. What I love most about my students is that although they face these barriers that affect their education, they are eager to learn and discover new things everyday.
Each day, I am inspired by their sense of curiosity, eagerness to read, and aspirations for the future.
My Project
Our classroom library reading corner is an essential and exciting part of our classroom. Each day, the library is used by my students to shop for books that are just right for them. We also use our library for a safe and cozy space to get comfortable and read. Although the library has a variety of books, many of these become lost, damaged, and are less engaging for my students. We do not have access to popular titles that my students like to read.
We would benefit from iPads to help enhance our library where my students can have access to an abundance of popular fiction and non-fiction texts.
If we were given iPads we would use apps such as epic books, National Geographic and also use Reading A-Z for guided reading instruction. What is great about these applications is they offer a variety of ways for students to access texts and most importantly, have fun learning. Some are read aloud to them while others help support comprehension with guided questions along the way while students are reading. All of these applications will help build my students independent reading skills as well as give them access to many more reading options that my classroom library ever could. If we were to receive iPads we would also use them to supplement our writing instruction, biography research, and “listening to reading” center. iPads are also important to help with reading comprehension because many of my students come from low-income backgrounds where there is little to no reading at home. This is why reading is such an essential part of our day. With very little access to technology in my classroom, iPads and wireless headphones, would benefit my students and help make our classroom a fun and exciting place to learn!
