Many students have a difficult time grasping the Iranian Revolution which took place in 1979. Most textbooks provide a limited explanation to this very complex and important topic in world history. Using the graphic autobiography "Persepolis" would provide students with an excellent opportunity to learn about this complex topic through the eyes of a young woman who experienced the Revolution herself as a child. In "Persepolis" Marjane illustrates her experience through a colorful and easy to understand comic. Using this book in a global history class would allow students to understand the important conflict of tradition versus modernity that people the world over struggle with today. Using the book as a supplement to the text in a unit on the Iranian Revolution would provide for student engagement and excitement on this topic. I would love to use this book with the students in my global history class because they often think that history is boring because of the way it has been presented to them. I think that using this strategy would show my students that there are several channels through which to explore history the least of which is the textbook. Most of my students have failed at other schools and are in my class as a sort of "last chance" before GED. I want to provide them with as much compelling material as possible. My students are bright and enthusiastic but life has handed them many problems making school sometimes a low priority. It is important that I show them how wonderful learning can be. And, hey, it might open some students to the wonderful world of comics !
