My students need 8 Merriam Webster Spanish-English Dictionaries, 2 copies of Merriam-Webster's Dictionary of Synonyms and Antonyms for Spanish Speakers, and 1 Merriam-Webster Handheld Dictionary and Thesaurus.
Students will be better prepared for Foreign Language Courses in College for the following reasons.
1. This project is designed the meet the individual need of all learners: visual, tactile, or auditory learners.
2. Students will be given the tools to actively be involved in the learning process.
3. Students will retain more information in hands on learning in comparison to those who are required to learn through Mnemonic techniques.
Students continually report that they have retained and been able to readily recall pertinent information when it was acquired in a fun and meaningful activity. Students will be better prepared for college because they will have identified what methods best suits their learning styles. They will better understand how to integrate other disciplines and strategies for internalizing new information and or experiences. This activity will give them a sense of ownership of the material.
Students love Spanish Scavenger Hunts. Students decode the messages worth various points in order to find people or objects and complete unique tasks. They use digital cameras to record the evidence. I recruited our principals, coaches, teachers, and cafeteria staff to play a part. Students get to learn positions, personnel, and much more. At the end, evidence is verified and points tallied. Winners are announced. The first team to accomplish all the tasks wins bragging rights. Challenges are issued and students eagerly start studying harder for the next hunt. In the end, I am pleased that my students have learned some Spanish!
To better serve the students in their college preparation and overall success in the Spanish class, students need more than one Spanish dictionary per group. Native speakers benefit from having access to Antonyms and Synonyms to increase fluency. Inclusion students would benefit from the electronic dictionary as this would help them keep up with their peers.
Your help will make it possible for these students to learn a second language while increasing their self esteem. Most of all, your contribution will make college a reality instead of a distant dream.
