Ipu Heke for Hawaiian Studies Class in Rural Hawai'i!

Help me give my students an Ipu Heke to be used for Hawaiian chanting and to dance Hula on their May Day Celebration!

FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. L. Walker's classroom raised $490

My Students

My scholars are an delightful group of elementary students that live in a rural community on the Island of Hawai'i. Our school has a diverse population primarily from native Hawaiian/Pacific Islanders, Asian, Hispanic and Mixed Race families. Our limited school funds only allow for encore classes Hawaiiana and Gardening twice a month.

Many of our students come from economically disadvantaged homes and have limited resources available to them for enrichment and enjoyment outside of school.

It is for this reason that their time in these classes are so important and that their experiences be the best they can possibly be. Our scholars' love and enjoyment of these encore classes are evident in their participation and engagement.

My Project

During our Hawaiian Studies Class, all elementary scholars learn about the History of the Hawaiian islands through songs, chants, poetry and learning to dance Hula. Many of our scholars have been learning Hawaiian Chants and Hula since kindergarten. The Ipu Heke is an essential Hawaiian Instrument needed for Hula. It is a percussion instrument made of dried gourds that provide the beat for Hula.

Learning the Hula and sharing this dance with our families and school community is what we look forward to most during the school year.

By donating to this project, you will help purchase a Ipu Heke for our Hawaiian Studies instructor, Kumu Liana, to use with each class in Hawaiian Studies. It will also be use during the hours of practice at school and when dancing the Hula during our upcoming May Day Celebration. At this time we have one Ipu Heke, but it is cracked and difficult to repair. This Ipu Heke will be used in multiple grades from K-5 for years to come!
