My Students
Brother is a gang banger. Hunger pains from no food in days. No parents. This is the sad life of too many of my students. Using iPods in my classroom will help my students become better readers and enhance their reading experiences. It will also excite many of them and get them excited about reading.
My students come from a wide range of backgrounds.
They are all capable of success, but no one has ever shown them what kind of success. My students look at the life around them and believe they are destined to flunk out of high school and live a less-than-rewarding life. I want to give my students all the skills they will need (emotional, physical, and social) to be contributing members of society. There is so much research which ties our reading scores to our graduation rates and inmate numbers. I aim to increase the graduation rate and lower the inmate rate by turning my students on to reading. Many have never held an iPod. Using iPods to turn them on to reading shows them that reading is exciting, it is fun, and it is rewarding. I believe it is important for my students to become lifelong readers and one way to do that is to prove to them the benefits of reading.
My Project
I am requesting five iPods for use in my classroom. I have my students set up in groups of five so they can learn to collaborate. Each day my students are asked to read silently for fifteen minutes. I have set up literacy circles where some students read on EReaders, some use iPads, some use laptops, and some use books. Using literacy centers in this method helps my students to be constantly engaged with the texts. For many of my students they struggle with reading fluently. Thus while they may understand the individual words, they do not understand them in a setting like a book. Using iPods allows them to hear the expression and the words and focus on simple comprehension. When a student's fluency is lacking, their understanding and comprehension skills tend to lack as well.
My students and I thank you for considering our project.
They don't have a lot in their lives to be proud of, but to know people like you care about them, will change their opinions forever. Many of them believe they are "destined" to fail. I am here to show them they are destined to succeed. My students can and will succeed. By engaging them in reading I am increasing their chances of graduating one book at a time. When they become lifelong readers, they become lifelong learners.
