Every day is a challenge when trying to get my students working on their centers. One of the best centers for learning to read but hardest to manage is our Listening Center. A few Apple iPods would make everything run so much smoother!
I have 23 first graders all of whom are ready and eager to learn to read every day.
They love books and can't wait to hear and read stories from the classics like Stone Soup to the latest and greatest like Junie B. Jones. I would like to instill a love of reading to my students and make reading something they look forward to every day.
My Project
Early Bird and Later Gator time is when the students have a chance to read in a small group setting. While one small group works with me, the other students have a specific task to complete and one of the best ones to help them learn to read is the listening center. They listen to a CD while reading along in a book. However, when using our old CD/Tape player most days end with frustration at not being able to get it to work properly. Having iPods to replace the Listening Center would make it so much easier. This generation of children, with all their embedded technology, already know how to use an iPod! The learning curve is minimal and I would be able to put all my current CD's into playlists on the iPods that would be easy for the children to access, play, and read along. In addition, I also have a number of books on cassette tapes. I would utilize our 5th grade buddies to help re-record those stories to be put into the iPods. This would be a great task to increase their fluency.
What could be better than making this a win-win for both first graders and fifth graders?
We help the first graders learn to read and we help the fifth graders become more fluent readers. Please consider our request. We will use it wisely! Thank you!
