Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I am a first grade teacher in a low-income, high poverty school district in the South Bronx. It is a public elementary school with 613 students. My class is filled with vibrant, eager learners who require a variety of ways to learn. About 75% of my students are performing below grade level and 100% of our students receive free lunch. Many of my students live in shelters, receive out of classroom services for speech, reading and math and are English language learners or have an Individualized Educational Plan (IEP).
My students face many challenges each day and come from low income families; their life experiences require different needs, and my students deserve nothing short of the best to help them reach their full potential.
They come from a community filled with homelessness. For many of them, I am the only comfort, security, and positive source in their life. I want to make my students feel welcomed, appreciated, loved, and know that they can do anything they put their minds too!
My Project
I would love to have 10-12 iPads for students to use in the classroom during guided reading, math groups and for independent reading. I currently have 3 working iPads in my classroom that are loaded with kid friendly apps.
These 2 extra iPads would give me a set of iPads that can be used for small group instruction.
I can use these iPads for making words activities ,reading, listening to stories, math problems, adding and subtracting, the list of is endless! Although we are encouraged not to share materials, I will disinfect the iPads after each use. Some students do not have iPad because the screen is either broken or the iPad no longer works. So students were given laptops and there are some activities that best when done on an iPad. I want to make sure that the learning experiences in my classroom are equitable, I want to have supplies and technology available for all students. No child left behind or left out!
Nearly all students from low‑income households
