Have you noticed the youth of today becoming tech wizards as babies? Help me funnel their expertise into a new age of learning. We need technology in our classroom to become career and college ready students.
I have a classroom of 21 kindergartners in a public school in Arkansas.
I have students from middle to low socio-economic status who are of a mix of Hispanic, Caucasian, Asian, and African American students. All of these racial groups, regardless of language and background, are very eager to learn. They are extremely motivated when going to our computer lab and when using our classroom Smartboard. They easily adapt to new situations and are up for the challenge of new technological implemented learning. My students will be able to work in multiple modalities (tactile, visual, and auditory) that will motivate them to practice new concepts and enhance their ability to share their thinking and learning with iPads. The iPad applications written for this age group include immediate feedback that motivates by either correcting mistakes or moving forward to new challenges.
My Project
The learning styles and needs of young children require tactile, visual, and auditory experiences. Young children need practice and repetition with the many concepts that are part of pre-reading, economic skills, and early math learning. Kindergartners gain from working together, guided by a teacher, and yet they also need the leeway to work at their own individual speed and developing skill level. This will provide an iPad to share between the Kindergarten children for student use. In addition, teachers and students will be able to develop a digital portfolio of student work (by using the camera and portfolio apps) to share with parents, creating a clearer and more comprehensive view of the child and his/her progress in school.
I want to follow the lead of many schools in this country that are effectively using iPads as tools for learning in early elementary programs.
Until now, my kindergartners have only had access to technology through my use of digital cameras, computer labs, and the classroom Smart Boards. The iPad offers an opportunity to enhance my students' learning with the direct and effective use of a highly interactive technology tool. We are ready to get started in a new age of learning!
